Dear Pug Lovers,
My poor Molly has been suffering from "allergies"...itching/biting paws, excessive face scratching, some scooting and some ear scratching. Our breeder and vet suspect her food to be the cause. (We thought it might be "seasonal" but she scratches the same in summer/fall and now winter) We need to give her food with No brewer's yeast, chicken or beef - we've tried 2 brands and she won't touch them. We've left her food down 2 days in a row and she wouldn't go near it. Thing is- at this point I don't even know if it really is the food. I'm afraid we'll lose her trust if we keep switching her food. I suspect 1. sh e doesn't like the taste 2. she's not getting what her brother is getting p.s. My other pug (her half brother) has no sign of any allergies and doesn' t scratch at all - we've kept him on the old food which he does really well with- as he has a tendency to get the runs with other foods My question: Does anyone have any suggestions? or has someone had the same experience with "allergies" ? Has anyone had an allergy screen done on their pug by a dermatologist? Thank you so much for any advice you can give. |

Hi,
Since you posted over a month ago, you might have resolved this issue already, but I figured I'd respond anyway. I can certainly sympathize with puggy allergies! My little guy, Genghis, has them pretty bad, but they're seasonal allergies (which we figured out on our own, b/c his biting/itching/scratching always seems to happy in the spring/fall, when my husband and I also suffer from seasonal allergies!), so I don't know that much about food allergies. However, I *do* know about allergy medication. We've tried Genghis on a few--started out with the typical OTC Benadryl that our vet in DC recommended, but it doesn't work when his allergies are the worst. We've found for Genghis that Atarax, which our vet prescribed, works like a charm! I don't know if allergy medicine would help your situation, but we've found it to be just great, and it might be worth a try/talk with your vet about? Anyway, not sure if this helps at all, but lots of sympathy for pug allergies! |
