Hi there, I just got a black pug puppy a few weeks ago and put a collar on him and his fur is starting to discolor. Is this common with black pugs? Is it natural or from the colllar? The collar isn't metal, its a red cloth one. Any help would be great, thanks!

None of the collars Ive ever put on Benson has made his fur discolored. Sorry I cant be of more help. Have fun with your new Puggly!

Hi my name is Bambi and I have a black pug. When we first got her at 4 months we put a collar on her and she started to loose her fur around the collar. It turned out to be demidex mites which is not unusual for puppies. I also had a tan pug with demodex mites and new well how to treat it. It was an easy remedy of Ivermectin daily in her food until we got a negative scrapping. I highly recommend you see a vet and have them check for the demodex mites. The vet at Cuyamaca Animal hospital is fantastic. If negative then no problem. It could be an allergy. If positive then I recommend doing the Ivermictin treatment. You can get the solution at any feed store. DO NOT DO DIPS! VERY BAD!. We also elliminated all corn, wheat, soy and switched to the Blue Buffalo Company foods. I now have 6 very healthy pugs with shiney coats and a healthy system. Email me if you have any questions. I did some major research about skin problems and pugs.

He's not losing any fur, its just discolored, someone said it was from the metal from the collar. So i'll try a nylon collar, see if that helps. thanks!

When we got our black pug Bella, she was 9 weeks old and pure black. At around 4-5 months she started to change color. Some spots around the back of her neck started to turn lighter. When I asked the vet they just said that some black pugs don't stay pure black and that it was just her markings. She is 1 1/2yrs now and still has some fawn color mixed in with the black around her neck. Her father was a fawn pug and her mother was black so I'm sure thats why. Hopefully this helps.

Our Apollo has gone through all of that. At about 9 months old he started to get some white fur & some fawn-colored fur (his mother was a fawn pug & his father was a black pug). He was jet-black when he was a puppy! He also had the demodex mites when he was a puppy -- and had to go through various treatments, including the dips (which he HATED) - which has led to a permanent bald patch on his neck, under his chin. (He prefers to think he's a rare and exotic bald-necked pug.)

Our fawn pug, Rocky, also started to change color when he was about a year old. He was a great fawn color when he was a puppy - and his fur got lighter in some areas, darker in some areas, and he even has a black stripe down his back, all the way to the tip of his curly tail (his mom was also fawn & his dad was a black pug).

Neither of our pugs wear collars at home anymore. They both seem to get irritated skin no matter what type of collar we put on them -- and we've tried everything. We usually let them roam collar-free around the house & just put their collars on when we go to the park.
