Hi everyone, please let me have any advise you have. Queenie has been coughing for what seems like ages.( 5 weeks) The vet said it was kennel cough and gave her antibiotics, it cleared a bit. He now says she has a crackle in her lung and is taking anti-enflametries. When she coughs it's as if she has something inside she needs to get up. She can be fast asleep then her tummy rumbles and she has a huge cough which seems to take hold of her whole body! It is a real hacking cough.
I'm not sure where to go next with this and just want to get it sorted. also do all pugs do this backward sneeze thing, trying to inhale to quickly or is this the beginning of breathing problems? Other than that she is a perfect, feisty darling.
Thanks for any help, Lisa x
Pablo

Hi Lisa

I am afraid that I think Queenie may be still suffering from Kennel cough. My Pablo had the Kennel Cough and it was very serious. In the whole lasted a month (from the first symptoms to the end of it), so it can take a while. Having said that he was very poorly before the antibiotics but after it he was fine (but took 14 days of it).

Secondly, having a medical background myself, having crackles in the lungs primarely would mean pneumonia therefore infection. I would not give antiinflamatories for that but another antibiotics as this infection does not seem to be resolving (Kennel cough can be caused by many different bugs and therefore not respond to the same antibiotics). Also when Pablo was unwell we gave him Benelin child cough as it relieved that nasty dry cough.

My advice would be to get a second opinion vet. I think that Queenie may still need antibiotics.

Obviously, keep Queenie away from the parks as she may still be contagious.

Good luck and my best wishes to Queenie smile

Thanks for your advise, the vet has assured me it isn't kennel cough now as it has been about 6 weeks ,I must say the cough she has now is different from earlier but I am not convinced by the vet! However this is the second vet we've seen, maybe we need to find a new practice. We are due to go back this week so I'll see what happens but for now I will try the cough syrup!
We were hoping to be at Green Park this weekend as I was assured she was no longer contagious but before we do I will definitely make sure, don't want any more coughing Pugs!
with love
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
How is Queenie doing?
hope her cough gone and she is well now!
I'm just wondering is she still have this backward sneeze, quick air inhaling? Peggy started to do this thing as well and I'm worrying a lot. My grandmother has a Pekeniese and she's got this thing as well but my grannie says that it's just dust in the nose and nothing to worry about. To be honest I'm not sure that it can be just a dust for me it looks more serious...Did you ask anyone about it, do you know if it's normal or it's better to see a vet about it?
Many thanks!
Tanya

Hi Tanya, yes at last Queenie has stopped coughing, we are so relieved! She does still do the snorting occasionally, when she is puffed out or excited. she did it at the vets who said it was a kind of backward sneeze and not to worry about it. He said if it got v bad he could operate to make her nostrils bigger, but it no way warrants this, not now at least. Hope this helps, Lisa

Hi Lisa, I'm very glad that Queenie is well now!!
Thanks a lot for your reply! about their snorting I noticed that Peggy does it usually in mornings when first goes outside. So it might be temperatures changes but if it gets worse I will definitely go to see my vet. Hopefully in fact it's nothing serious))
