My vet has recommended that Lila have her teeth cleaned. They'll have to put her under anesthesia, which scares me. Please share your your thoughts and experiences...

Hi,

I had my three boys: Poncho, Chipper and Pirate done all on the same day and I too was worried. Dr. Nikki Burk ( THOMP member) was wonderful and called me during surgery and after surgery with each pug. She called during to let me know that first of all the dog was doing OK and secondly to tell me her findings and what teeth needed to be pulled etc etc. After the pug was done with surgery she called me to tell me they were breathing fine after and waking up. We talked a lot!!!!

They all came home with gleaming white teeth, and some missing teeth ( believe me, there will probably be some extractions needed and all had nice smelling breath, and still do.

Make sure your vet understands brachycephalic breeds and their special anesthesia requirements.

Good luck to Lila!!!!!!

I agree with Sue, make sure your doctor has a lot of experience with pugs when it comes to anesthesia.

The teeth are very important and keeping them clean can prolong a pugs life. I know that my doctor monitors my pugs' teeth and will only clean them when it's absolutely necessary, but at the same time, it will eventually be necessary for their health and wellbeing. So, in short, it needs to be done if recommended by I vet (in my opinion) but make sure you have a good vet.

Our vet highly reccomends C.E.T. it's an Enzymatic Dentifrice toothpaste that all you need to do is get the pug to lick it off your finger and the enzymes do the rest! Lavie absolutely loves it.

Lisa,

Where do you get this toothpaste and do you know the cost?

Thank you everyone for your comments. I now take Lila and Floyd to Grand Avenue Vet clinic in St. Paul. I believe that they do have pug patients, but I have not specifically asked about the their dentist's experience with the pug breed. I will and I'll look for the tooth paste, too.

Yes, please tell! Where do you find this toothpaste? I'd have better luck at accomplishing world peace than getting a tooth brush in Pickles mouth. Luckily he flosses his own teeth and loves bones which helps keep them clean. The flossing always makes me smile.

Yah, I want to know how he *flosses* to!
The CET Tooth Paste is available at most Veterinarians. It comes in 3 flavors. My guys like the Malt flavor. I have better luck with wrapping a washcloth around my finger than using a brush. CET also makes a dental *chew*. These are really great and my Pugs love them.
One thing for sure....Pug dental health is very important and we should all be working on getting our Pugs used to having their teeth brushed and having professional dentals when needed.

At our Vet the paste is $18 a tube and she has malt, seafood, poultry, beef...... We also get Aquadent from the vet for a water additive that helps the oral health. The additive runs about $45 a bottle.
