Well, I haven's talked about this, but we've been battling corneal ulcers on Pogo's eyes, for a little more than two weeks now.
To start this all off, we've been having some very, very windy days here, and one day about 3 weeks ago, Pogo came in from outside, with his right eye closed. I immediately started treatment with triple antibiotic ointment, atropine, and Optimune. This went on for a week, and then he started to hold the other eye shut, too, so I took him in to work with me, to get it checked out. He had one large, deep ulcer on the right eye, and two shallower and smaller ulcers on the left eye. Since I had already begun treatment, Doc told me to just continue with what I was doing, but he did prescribe rimadyl along wiith the atropine for the pain. I took him in for a re-check last Thursday, and there was no change, so I was told to bring him back today. Got the word today, that there is still no change in the right eye, but one of the ulcers in the left eye has healed, but the other one in that eye hasn't changed. I'm to bring him back on Thursday, and if there's still no change, he is going to require surgery by a specialist. I have no idea of the cost of this, but it has to be done, as it's his eyesight we're talking about. I know it's going to be in the thousands of dollars, and I sure don't have it laying around, so I don't know for sure, what we're going to do. I know no one is prepared for an expense like this, and we certainly don't have it. Oh, to be independently wealthy, at times like this........sigh |

I am really surprised your vet suggested optimune, I believe it has a steroid in it and that is not to be used for a ulcer. Have you taken him to a specialist?

No, Carla.......Optimune is cyclosporin, for dry eye. It just produces more tears, to lubricate the eye. I think what you are thinking of is Duramune, which is an eye ointment used for conjunctivitis, and that should never be used if an ulcer is present, because it does have cortisone in it.
It's hard to keep all the "munes" straight........ |

Oh no! I hope his eyes get better soon. Has your vet tried plasma? I know I've use it with success. They spin down the blood and use the plasma as eye drops. Myra could tell you more about it as she is who I learned it from.

Your probley right, but I use optimune for Zelda. And my vet told me to not use it for a ulcer. I sure hope he is going to be ok, I am still dealing with the puppy's eye was was edema filled from a injury. It's still not healed.

Oh, I feel for you! I have dealt with my share of eye problems and it really stinks. How sad that both his eyes have ulcers! Geez, that is unlucky. Good luck, keep us posted.
Doesn't blood serum sometimes aid healing? |

What a rotten turn of events Bethy. Having dealt with ulcers in a pugs eye in the past, I know it is expensive and painful for them. Good luck with Pogo and let us know how it all goes, we will be praying for him.
