i'm always on the lookout for healthy treats...i know marrow bones are good for them to chew as long as they are raw...i have never given my guys them so i have some questions. first...can i just get them from the butcher at the grocery store? how big should they be? how long do you let them chew them for? how long do they last? what do you do when they are done or you feel they've had enough and there is still bone there...do you refrigerate it, freeze it or throw it out? are they messy? i think that's enough questions for now...if i have more, i'll let you knowwinkbiggrin

thanks!

Ya, they are definitely messy and kind of gross lol.

I usually let my guys have them for a few hours (supervised), then I toss 'em. But I suppose if there was still marrow & meaty stuff left you could probably rinse them off and refrigerate them for later. But if the thing is pretty picked clean with mostly bone left, I would throw it away.

I get mine at the grocery store. Sometimes they have pug-sized ones (that are maybe an inch or two thick). Mostly I have to ask them to cut some down for me.

Funny, some dogs seem to LOVE them, others completely turn their noses up at them.

We buy them for Maddie and Cooper and they adore them. We buy them a couple packs at a time, keep the ones we are going to use that day in the fridge and put the others in the freezer to keep. We only give them to them when we can watch them and take them away in a few hours and throw them out. they get icky after a couple of hours chewing, etc.. they are kind of messy if you get ones with alot of meat on the outside but we normally get the ones with only marrow in the middle. Maddie and Cooper love them though so it's worth the mess.

You can get them at the meat section of the grocery store.
Sometimes you have to ask the guy behind the counter to
get them for you.

I prefer the big knuckle bones to the marrow bones, because the marrow makes my kids vomit. The marrow is just too rich for them, as it's all fat. However, the knuckle bones usually have lots of meat left on them, when they come from the meat dept. and the kids just love THEM.
I never toss them. My kids chew them FOREVER! I will buy a bunch of them, enough for everybody to have one, and when they're done with them for the day, I just toss them in the toy box, and they dig them out again day after day. They're still working on some that I bought in February.

Shannon we buy them at shaws, and they are labeled as soup bones and if the don't have any out and the butcher is around we ask for them but they normally have them. Look for the ones that are in a circle though, not cut in half length wise as they can hurt your dog mouth and gums with shards.

We buy marrow bones, and whole racks of beef ribs, the beef ribs we cut up into individual ribs and freeze them. We give them to the dogs straight out of the freezer. One nice side effect of giving them raw bones is nice shiney teeth!
After they have been around for a few days and starting to look "dry" we toss them.

thanks everyone...i saw them at the grocer yesterday, they were about 3-4 inches long and about 1 1/2 inches around...is that a good size for them or should they cut them smaller? also, being that the marrow has alot of fat, how often do you give them to your guys?...i don't want to put on the pounds, we are getting into bathing suit season, you knowwinktongue!

I get mine at a butch shop/meat store and they cut them for me when I come to the size I want. But most grocery stores will sell them, ask someone in the meat department they'll be able to show you where they are.

I typically throw them away after they get done chewing on them even if stuff is left, just cause I think they look gross (lol).biggrin
