So awhile ago at vet they told me to watch Emma's weight that she was heavy. At the time I really did not think she was that big. You guys see pics so tell me if im completely wrong. Anyway I did not do too much about it just kept feeding her the same as I have been 1/2 cup of kibble in morning and at night along with veggies and fruit mixed in.
Well now that Emma seems to be so hungry in morning with her throwing bile (which she did this morning) I want to give her a snack before bed to hold her over since I cant handle seeing her throw up. I feel horrible. Now I dont want to be over feeding her but at the same time I do think she needs a little something before bed. Any suggestions on what I should do?? |

Will she eat green beans? They are filling and will not affect her waist. 1c of food a day is a lot for a pug, unless it is VERY active.

My Jac Jac is the only one of my adults that gets over a cup a day and that is because he burns it doing agility and even with that amount he has a waist. lol He burns it like crazy. What kind of food are you feeding? |

I feed them California Natural Herring and sweet potato. How much should I actually be feeding them then??

Now this is a good question, because I feed Trunks about a 3/4 a cup in the morning and then 3/4 cup at night. And now for reason he is waking up with his stomach growling. But from what you all are saying I think I may be feeding him to much. He's at 25.2 pounds and the vet thinks he looks great and he still has a waist line. So now I don't know if I should start feeding less or not

see that is my thing! The vet told me Emma was over weight at 19 pounds which I thought "ok i guess she is" but I know all pugs are different but Emma looked smaller than most pugs I know. Even Brody I know he is a boy but is catching up to Emma and is almost bigger than she.
With all the throwing Emma is doing and once she eats is all fine it concerns me to start feeding her much less! ![]() |

Shannon, you really just need to assess her physical condition yourself to determine if she's heavy. When you look at her from above, does she have a distinctly defined waist (look just behind her rib cage)? If you run your hand along her sides, can you feel her ribs? You should be able to feel them easily, and it should feel like a smooth layer of skin over them--not a thick layer of fat. If there is no waist, and she's the same width from front to back, she's overweight. For what it's worth, Emma has looked just fine to me in the pictures that I've seen.
Natty has definitely thickened up--she's at 17.5 pounds and she really needs to be closer to 15.5. or 16. Klaus is much taller and more barrel-chested than she, and he's maybe .5 pound heavy at 19. He's definitely filled out in the last year, and mostly just "matured" I think. He was a very lanky, skinny puppy, but now has a much thicker chest and head. Natty, you can tell, she's too thick in the waist. It's obvious that she's heavier than she should be. |

What I have found, and it has taken a year for me to educate my vets lol, is that they like to see them on the "skinny" side. The way to tell if your dog is too heavy is by having them stand calmly and place your hands or I use the tips of my fingers on their ribs. If you can feel their ribs by applying light pressure you are fine. If you have to dig and move around the tissue in order to find the ribs your dog could probably stand to lose a few pounds. Then it is just trial and error as to how much to feed. It took me awhile to adjust and readjust depending on the girth of my dog. I find you have to start the process all over when you switch foods since they are all different.
You will get it. ![]() Heather |

OK im not going to worry. I can feel her ribs very easily with a very light touch. I really think she is all muscle. I think feeding her what I feed is ok for not and I am not going to worry. I think I may go buy them some cookies to give before bed so she is not starving. Any sugguestions on cookies for them??
